Building Our Home As A Owner Builder

Wow! so we are almost at the finish line. I can not wait to give our final home reveal. We will still have some features that we will plan on adding later this year to add the final touches. This has been a long process for us. We built during covid, which greatly impacted our whole process. Warning this story will be made over several posts and it does get a little crazy from living in a fifth wheel, having no water, getting pregnant, and doing some of the actual structure build ourselves while also living without our camper for almost 2 weeks. We were told several times we should have created a youtube channel just for the crazy process we had. Something we might still do but for now, it will live here on the blog.

So to help I will start from the beginning.

We bought a total of 63 acres back in February 2020. It is so beautiful here in the mountains. We have pretty sunrises and sunsets. We have deer, turkey, and bears on the property as well. The land came with several amazing homesite locations.

This is a snapshot of us leaving the closing attorney after signing the paperwork.

Once we bought the land we knew we had to find the perfect house plan for it. After coming across a plan that we liked but wanted our own custom twist to it then it was time to start the planning.

I bought almost all my light fixtures and plumbing fixtures before we ever broke ground. I started storing all of them in our warehouse to have them ready when the time came. I created my mood boards for some of the key elements of the house and kept dreaming of the end results. I chose light fixtures by Progressive and Capital lighting because of the looks and quality. My plumbing fixtures are from Delta, Moen, and Brizo. Links to these products can be found here.

I knew forever that I wanted a white house with natural wood tones and the perfect stone. Pulling all these elements with just the right products and materials was going to be the hard part.

We sold our home at the peak of the market during covid and we purchased a Grand Design Reflection fifth wheeler as our temporary home during construction and thought we will be out soon. Well soon turned into just over a year.

We have many crazy stories about living in our camper for over a year but that will be for another post. Many had asked what our camper looked like on the inside. Here is a short video of the inside.

We had many challenges with the build from weather delays, to contractors not showing up, and supply shortages. We loved being able to be onsite every day there was progress and getting to see it be built. We could easily resolve any issues that came up and keep moving forward.

Here was my inspiration board for the exterior of the house. We chose Sherwin Williams exterior paint in the color Fundamental white. This color can be mixed at Sherwin Williams or at Lowe’s since it is an HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams exclusive color. More as to why I love this white color and why I chose it over all the others in another post.

The stone was the hard part. I am very picky when it came to the color and look of the stone. I wanted a stone that looked and felt natural, had complementing colors, and was not the everyday brown and orange stone. I was lucky enough to stumble across the perfect stone while attending the Atlanta Home Show. The brand is Eldorado Stone in the color Boardwalk. Don’t let the website pictures fool you. The colors of this stone show grey, cream, white, chocolate, charcoal, and sand. I called tons of stone companies and finally found the best price with Power Brick They not only had the best price but also had great customer service and had it delivered sooner than anyone.

Our front door was another element that I was picky about also and knew that it had to be White Oak or Mahogany. Doors are crazy expensive. We looked for months at so many stores and builder’s surplus locations. Since we have very large doors at 8′ tall by 6′ wide it made it harder to find and more money when we did. Then just like that, I found Door Clearance Center! Yep all the way in Texas but even after freight it was cheaper than doors locally. Here are the beautiful doors we ordered. They came on a large tractor-trailer and would not come all the way to our house since we live off of a half-mile-long gravel driveway. So we had to meet them close by in a large parking lot and have them unload in our truck for us to drive back. Thank goodness we have a long-bed truck! At that time I was also 8 months pregnant.

Keep checking back for more updates!
